Stoma Stifler™ is a lightweight stoma guard and stoma noise suppressor for people with a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy. Its molded cup is made of closed-cell, high-density polyurethane foam, the same kind of sound-dampening foam used in car interiors, to quiet stoma noise and shield the stoma from impact, seat belts and pressure. It was invented by an automotive noise engineer for his mother, and launched in 2013.
Made by an engineer for his mother
Stoma Stifler started with one woman who had an ostomy. She noticed her stoma made noises at the worst moments, and the people in her ostomy support group told her the same thing happened to them.
Her son, Mark Bain, worked at Chrysler in BSR, the team that tracks down buzz, squeak and rattle noises in cars. He knew the dense, sound-deadening foam automakers build into car frames to block highway noise, and he wondered whether the same material could quiet a stoma.
Nine versions later
Mark made prototypes for his mother from that foam and kept refining them. Nine iterations later, the Stoma Stifler as it is today was born: a molded cup of closed-cell, high-density polyurethane foam, with a firm spine that shields the stoma and a soft edge that conforms to the body.
Never meant to be a business
It was never meant to be commercial. Mark made it for his mother and a friend or two. She loved giving it to people in her support group who needed it, and the requests kept coming: “Can I have one?”
So the design was researched further, a mold was made so it could be produced faster, and Stoma Stifler launched in 2013. It has been helping people with an ostomy ever since.
Stoma Stifler was co-invented by Mark Bain and Andrea Bain.
